It's easy to see why central planners love rail; it's another tool to
use to dictate how people should live and where they should go. Of
course, the problem is that the grand designs fail in most cases to
consider how people
want to live - and where they
need to go. And
even NPR is starting to get it:
Today, only 5 percent of workers take
public transportation, down from 11 percent in 1960; only 4 percent
walk to work, down from 7 percent in 1960.
Cannibalize bus services in an effort to force people onto rail, and watch the transit numbers slide. It's the hot trend.
