I've already seen discussion groups where people plan on not validating their tix until the cops get on board. Sure it flashes but are the cops going to memorize every person on the platform to say that they DIDNT just get on then? Probably not.

It's possible to check the people on the platform before the train arrives, and if there's enough inspectors or few boardings, one person only has to monitor people boarding through one door.
But making it so you can validate inside the sterile paid-fare area does open the door to cheating. Check the fare evasion rate on the Streetcar with their on-board fare boxes, (though I bet their overall rate is down now that you buy fare on the platforms).
