The
District tells us to stay home when we're sick, but proposes (in their
next contract) to terminate us after two such incidents within a single
calendar year. The District tells us to manage our time lost with
FMLA/OMLA, but contracts that management out to a third party (The Reed
Group) whose sole purpose, it seems, is to disqualify us from any
protection from the law.
Personally, I acknowledge a professional
ethic not to drive a city bus when I'm distracted with illness or
injury. Consequently, I have also knowingly sacrificed my eligibility
for any performance related award for Operator of the Month, Quarter,
Year, or Master Operator because I don't come to work when I'm sick.
It's a damn good thing I'm a union member and earn Paid Sick Leave, or I
would have been fired for my professional ethics a long time ago.
