However, MERAA is a private non-profit association initially formed by employees to sponsor employee recreational activities (and for charitable purposes going to ATU Local 587). The transit agency leases the association space to operate vending machines at the agency's facilities and from the proceeds of the vending machines, MERAA sponsors the activities with a portion going to ATU 587. No funding comes from Metro other than allowing the use of their facilities for said vending machines. Vending machine proceeds, sponsorships, and other fund raising activities are what allows the association to function.
