TriMet punches its ticket to the future

A little history on this subject...

Several years ago, last time they wanted to test the smart card waters, TriMet hired a six figure director, one Tomas Oliva who supposedly had a great deal of smart card experience and would bring TM into the smart card future.

What happened was he drove the Fare Maint dept so far into the ground the dept had to be merged with another department (whch had all the senior fare techs that had moved to that dept) (some may recall things got so bad that the TriMet Down website was created to keep track of TVM failures). All Oliva did was implement many underhanded policies and procedures designed to hide the real problems from the public (such as removing the telltale yellow blinking light error indicator, creating a screen saver on the TVM screen to hide fault displays implementing tedious and ridiculous SOPs that further bogged down the maint process, to name a few), which obviously did not work, and while Oliva was eventually asked to leave TM, he got a high paying job with Scheidt & Bachman, the vendor what supplies the TVMs (and some wonder at what point he actually started working for the vendor).

So if the past is any indicator, it is hoped that TM doesn't screw things up that bad with this new project. But then TM is TM after all...
