Transit workers are an easy target for the 'power elite' that continues sucking up the wealth that is given up by the working class. Transit workers have very little sympathy from a public that is mostly using cars to get around and 'bus driver' is a very disrespected profession in a country that values the valueless like athletes and celebrities
Forty of Valley Metro Regional Public Transportation Authority’s 101 Phoenix-area bus lines would cease. Transit officials said the 40 routes in jeopardy average 57,000 weekday boardings. Light rail will not be affected. (they've been able to split the workers in Arizona)

Of course, there is one driving job I have found to be the most reviled , underpaid, underappreciated, abuse-laden, and generally looked down upon position in America.
Having spent several years as a school bus driver for a private contractor, I found out what a disrespected job really was!
The one and only saving grace to that job was that it gave me the experience to get hired as a transit driver, and while the BS wasn't much improved, at least the wages and bennies were vastly improved.
