Nationally, 86% of commuting is by car, and it's essentially the same in
much of the Portland metro area - although on the relatively flat east
side if the river, along with the inner west sides, a fair number of
people ride bicycles to and from work. It doesn't help, though that the
development agency has for years been cannibalizing bus services to pay
for rail operations. Rail simply doesn't take most people where they
want or need to go, when they want or need to be there.
