"Gold Standard"?

One thing I always found fascinating since moving to Portland is the narcissism of this city and some of its residents. We are the 'greenest' or most 'sustainable' or the 'best bicycle city in the whole wide world' on and on and on. And good old Trimet is also part of that narcissistic view Portlander's have of themselves. (let's qualify that, some Portlander's)

Sure Portland has the advantage of being in a climate that basically is quite beautiful (but even that is nothing compared to Northern California specifically the Russian River region) and sure Portland has a fairly attractive city core but COME ON PEOPLE, Have you not been anywhere else at all?

Trimet= its the "GOLD STANDARD" for transit operations. I don't know who comes up with this stuff but anybody who has been to any big city can see pretty fast that Trimet is hardly a world class transit agency. The light rail even stops running around midnight, how cow town is that?

I'm known as a TRIMET HATER,  this is how people describe me when I openly criticize the agency I once worked for.

I say again, for the 100th time, I DO NOT HATE TRIMET, I HAVE NEVER 'HATED' TRIMET. Hell Trimet has left this huge imprint on my life why would I 'hate it'?

Let me be clear, I get tired of these golden accolades constantly showered on an agency that has a 'good' transit system but not even close to world class. The few light rail lines are no big deal, for crying out loud I grew up in Boston which has a truly world class transit system, Trimet doesn't even come close to that sort of service.

And ever since Mcfarlane (acting as the agent for the forces of evil, I know he doesn't make all these anti union decisions himself, and I DO NOT HATE MCFARLANE EITHER BTW) began attacking his union employees I have become an tireless agent to destroy the myth of Trimet superiority.

NOBODY ELSE IS TAKING THAT ROLE, The few others that have taken that role have pretty much left the scene (and one was threatened with prison) somebody has to take that role, otherwise Trimet will get away with complete murder. (actually just some of the blogging population loads and loads of citizens have had enough of Trimet shenannigans)

Americans are using mass transit more than ever. So why is ridership on 'gold standard' TriMet down? | OregonLive.com

Al, every city in America has it's boosters. It's the rare city where everybody agrees, " Yup, this place is utter cr@p." Portland is a mix of good and bad - just like Boston.

I agree that you're not a Trimet hater, but (thankfully) you're obsessed with this agency. Unfortunately, lots of us have had former employers where we invested giant chunks of our work lives and they turned out to be completely unworthy of our loyalty. Maybe it's bitter disappointment, not hatred?

Most importantly, you do have a unique position in local transit. There are no other vocal critics of mass transit plans who are on the job day in and day out. The union feels it should keep its head down; it's been up against union-buster specialists hired by Trimet. Joe Rose is as critical as the mass media gets, and he mostly regurgitates transit press releases. And you're right; McFarlane has been given a brief to change the agency in the most brutal fashion possible. His reward will be a five-figure pension check, probably spent in some state far from Oregon.
