STUPIDEST IDEA EVER
@trimet The new "bus is turning" announcement is SO annoying. I live next to a curve in the road and I hear it all day and I can't sleep.
yup its bad!!! its much worse then befor, if your wheel is truned to the left and your waiting for traffic to clear. All you hear is the bus is truning the bus is turning the bus is turning the bus is turning.....its sucks and i let them NO.
As I've posted ad nauseum, the best way to avoid turning bus accidents with pedestrians, especially left-turning bus accidents, is to do everything possible to give the operator a clear field of vision.
Money would be better spent retrofitting the fleet with top-mounted left mirrors ...even Mr. Sale agrees with this.
Because it's Trimet's stupid way to show the public that they are trying to do "something" to increase safety so that a tragedy like what happened to Mr. Sale's daughter will "hopefully" not happen again. WRONG! ...it could very well happen again.
Get to the root of the problem as to why that terrible accident happened. In my opinion (and I know my opinion doesn't count for shit), the root of the problem was that the operator's field of vision was blocked by the left mirror ...when it didn't have to be if the mirror was mounted in such a way as to NOT block an operator's crucial field of vision when making a left turn.
I don't blame that accident on the operator, I blame it on management. Most of the managers who have the decision-making capabilities have never driven a transit bus in service. Yet they proclaim to be experts at safety and believe it is wise to spend money on a talking bus rather than getting to "the root of the problem." They don't understand (the way I do ...one who has had several close calls making a left turn in a transit bus and almost running over pedestrians) that removing the obstructions that hinder an operators field of vision when making a left turn would virtually eliminate a left turn accident with a pedestrian. Sure, an operator can "bob and weave" and "rock and roll" before making a left turn but why SHOULD THEY HAVE TO when all that is necessary is to remove the unnecessary obstructions? There are so many other things that a transit operator needs to do while multitasking than to remember to "rock and roll" before making a left turn.
I'm sorry, Al, for using your blog for my selfish agenda. I just don't want to see another accident like what happened in downtown Portland that April night in 2010.
Frankly, this blog and its very few readers and posters are missing some salient points.
It is the pedestrians and cyclists who are most responsible for their own safety and the safe operation of TriMet buses.
If only peds took full responsibility for their actions while trespassing on Portland's motorways. Perhaps if the peds wore strobe lights and Bluetooth transceivers to warn bus drivers of their presence in the motorway there would be fewer "incidents" (aka, suicide by bus).
The future is wide open and with applied technology of the Stacy-Whitbec pedestrian safety flasher (available to all peds for the low, low, subsidized fee of $69)there will be fewer deaths.

Would Mr. Sale's daughter been able to get out of the way had the bus announced that it was turning? No way. Would JeneƩ Hammel and Danielle Sale be alive today if Sandi Day's vision not been blocked by the left mirror? Yes!
"A talking bus" is definitely a stupid idea. Stupid ideas = stupid management.

Thanks, Al ...much appreciated.
