Look Where bus mirror is in latest Bus related death!
Right where Trimet bus mirrors are and where DAVID SALE says they should not be!

One of the news articles I read said the bus was turning from westbound Glisan Street to northbound Sixth Avenue when it hit the girl. I'm not that familiar with Portland but wouldn't that be a right turn?
Can anybody confirm that the bus was turning right and not left?
And yes, that mirror is definitely mounted where it could block vision.
I still say, however, that the Sandi Day accident was NOT completely driver error. I truly believe that there is severe negligence on the part of the employer for not correcting a problem they know is dangerous and can lead to even the most careful driver to have a catastrophic accident such as the one where Sandi Day was involved.
I can't say too many times on this BLOG, "there but for the grace of God, go I" as I had several close calls coming within mere inches of running over pedestrians while I made a left turn in a transit bus ...yet I retired with a 28-year NSC safe driving award from another transit agency.
I did NOT consider myself an unsafe driver and consciously tried my very best, every single time I got behind the wheel of a bus, to be as safe a transit operator as possible. Yet, I could have VERY easily found myself in the EXACT situation as Sandi Day.
I can still clearly see the expression of the faces of the two women as I slammed on the brakes coming within inches of making contact with them in the two separate incidences where I had these close calls …and I thought I was “rocking-and-rolling” but evidently was not rocking-and-rolling enough. I will never forget their wide-eyed look of terror and it will stay with me until the day I die.
Trimet managers will have on their hands the blood of the next person killed by a left-turning Trimet coach if they keep refusing to reposition the left mirror. At least the agency where I worked did make an effort retrofit their coaches with a smaller mirror head and mounted it lower. They started the project shortly before I retired and just recently completed it. I applaud them for spending the money and making an effort to prevent another catastrophe from happening.

Thanks.
Yes a right turn but the mirror is still in the place that is questionable
It appears to b another case of driver error. The human factor is the most important fail.
Thanks, Al.
